Lydia

It's purely speculative, but it's not hard to imagine that Paul, had he seen a woman in his vision, might have hesitated or even doubted whether he should go to Macedonia at all.  In a time when society was deeply patriarchal, a vision of a woman may have led Paul to question the wisdom or propriety of reaching out to a female audience.  However, God, knowing the hearts and limitations of His servants, orchestrated the encounter in a way that bypassed any hesitation.  By sending Paul a vision of a "man of Macedonia," God made it easier for Paul to take the step forward, perhaps without even fully understanding why he was being called to this particular place and people.

Once in Philippi, however, it wasn’t an issue.  Lydia’s faith, her position in society, and her quick acceptance of the Gospel proved to be a pivotal moment for the spread of Christianity in Europe.  It’s almost as if God knew that Lydia’s heart was already prepared and simply had to bring Paul into that divine moment.  In the Balkans, there’s a saying: “They were on the face of the place”—meaning, they were exactly where they needed to be, at the right time, on the right ground.  Just as God knew Paul needed the vision of a man to move forward, He also knew that when Paul arrived, Lydia would be the one ready to receive him.

He saw a man’s need—
God sent him to a woman.
Peace makes its own way.

On the Dish Line

I never had a hard job
The hardest thing I ever did was clean a floor for a boss to arrive on
I started on the dish line

Some people will never know how to mop
What is easy to me is impossible to others
Those dishes always got done

We spoke when we were busy
We talked when we didn't have anything to do
On the dish line there is little supervision

You either go on or you go away
Being short has its advantages too
Lower center of gravity I was not going in the freezer

Hazing is the norm in the kitchen
But the guy who first saw I wasn't going in
Was my first professional mentor

Someone was on my side
I would be on the side of others
The line is a circle

Nobody Wants to go to Court

Justice rains
Hope is sweet
Sugar

Tastes like everyday
Made better in most ways
Ambrosia

The more we do what we must
The more we get to do what we want
Nectar is the name

Nobody Wants to go to Court

Justice is the art of nations
We know what it feels like
Can sever a people from a dead History

We have a feel for many things
Most people can drive
What would this world be if this was not true

If we had a better feel for justice than the road
We would stay home happy I would guess

Nobody Wants to go to Court

The prison industrial valley of darkness
Too clean is the smell
In the shadows so dirty

Being innocent is rarely what people prove
Your supposed to make a deal
Ninety seven percent of the time they don't have to do their job

You can sit for years in those three percent innocent in my town
When they do their jobs it is always a mess
Being innocent and poor is a bad combination

Nobody Wants to go to Court

The shining city upon a hill has a shiniest bit
Justice calls the dawn's light to the long night

Ringing out hammer on wood
The finality we don't want to hear

Some judgements break the sound barrier
Most of the testimony whispered in back rooms

We make a show of justice and clamor for truth
When we weave wisdom's song

Play your part and the world is better
Ring through the valley

Nobody Wants to go to Court

We have made this world a strange place
We treat justice like an idol
What we should be in relationship with we worship

There is only one way we know how to do that
We make it expensive and exclusive
Losing in some can cost you more years than you have to live

The place where facts matter
Most people born will never see snow or justice
